Alright, so as I realized that this is my last blog of the course and I had no idea what to write about except that it had to be fun and interesting. I searched through countless Cracked articles, Google, and etc. and found nothing really interesting, until I stumble upon two Filipino comic’s who have been adapted into movies. They are Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah and Flash bomba.
Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah, is a comic that parodies Wonder Woman, the main character is Ada. He is a beautician, who lives with his two best friends, and is showering when a meteorite lands in tub with him. He eats it and says the word, “Zaturnnah” and is immediately turned into a Crime-Fighting Super Woman. That is correct not only does, he get new powers, but he is turned into a woman. What I find interesting about this comic adaption is the merger of American comic lore, Spanish language and Tagalog. If you watch the clip that I am attaching, you can see the heavy influence of Wonder Woman and Justice League in the costume of the character as well as some of the cheesy lines they utter. The whole film is basically in Tagalog except when they utter key superhero phrases like “Return back to your planet, Scumbag.” Then it is in English. The Spanish cultural elements are obviously in the words, since Tagalog has a mix of Spanish from when they were Spaniard colony and the hilariousness of the premise of the film and the comic in general. Comics in the Latin world tend to be wholly inappropriate and funny, you can see this: with the gender-bending premises, the antics that Zaturnnah has, as well as the evil Alien Super woman who try to convince Zsa Zsa to join them in a universe takeover attempt.
This is the film adaption of Carlos Vergara’s comic Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah :

Next, comic that also has the merger of the three cultures and makes it unique interesting and hilarious is Flash Bomba. Flash Bomba is created by Mars Ravelo, and it’s about a paralyzed man who fights a Filipino demon called, Tikabalang and defeats him. As a result he gets a wish, and he asks for the use of his legs and superpowers. The demon played a trick on him and gave him the superpowers a bunch of superpowers but when he activates them his hands swell humongous proportions. He can super strength, the ability to make thunder with his large hands, and he can sort a fly by moving his large hands really fast. Again, it’s really interesting watching the adaptation and watch Flash Bomba uttering lines like: “Never Fear Flash Bomba is here.”
The whole plot is a parody of Justice League superheroes, with incorporation of Spanish and Filipino culture.
